Monday’s Water News: Water Main Break in Des Moines Leads to Three Car Accidents

Freezing cold temperatures and a water main break created a sheet of ice at a Des Moines, Iowa intersection which led to three separate crashes this morning. The ice created a near inch thick sheet of ice on the roadway making driving conditions difficult for motorists.

Residents in Bayonne, New Jersey experienced an interruption in water service early this morning after a 30-inch main on the city’s main aqueduct failed most likely due to freezing temperatures.

Clayton, New York plans to invest more money to improve its aging sewer system to accommodate development.For its latest project the village is moving forward with a $130,000 pumping station upgrade to reduce sewage overflow.

Stimulus Spotlight
The city of Alice, Texas broke ground Monday on $4.5 million in sewer and water improvements because of stimulus money it received from the state Water Development Board.  The city will build a major sewer line, which will connect smaller sewer lines to the city’s Southside Wastewater Treatment plant.

Charlestown, Indiana has accepted $1.3 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to complete the final phase of construction on a sewer project.
