Wednesday’s Water News: Water Main Break Causes Problems at NASA Spaceport

Posted in Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas at 4:19 pm by bengann

A water main break today at NASA’s spaceport in Cape Canaveral, Florida disrupted preparations for the space shuttle Discovery flight on November 1. The water main break forced NASA to close the space center to most personnel Wednesday morning, and Discovery’s short trip from one building to another was delayed until Thursday.

In Alabama, a judge said he intends to appoint a receiver over the Jefferson County sewer system who could have authority to raise rates. County officials, who opposed having a receiver, said they hope any rate increases are reasonable. The county has defaulted on approximately $515 million in sewer debt payments paving the way for a person to be appointed with the authority to fix rates.

More than $156,000 in change orders have been approved by the City Council in Astoria, Oregon for a $7 million combined sewer overflow project.

Stimulus Spotlight
The Board in Plainfield Township, Michigan has approved $8.25 million in bonds for water system projects in a 5-2 vote. The township expects to get interest rates of 2 percent to 2.5 percent, with some of the interest to be forgiven as part of the federal stimulus package.

Yesterday, House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.), who represents the 6th Congressional District, met with rural Marion County residents about stimulus money he’s allocating to create a new water pipeline.
